Field notes on weather, tides and slow repairs

Rebuilding the north jetty

The old timbers came out easier than expected. Two of them were sound enough to keep for the shed roof, the rest went to the burn pile. Low tide gave us four hours; we used three.

Salt does strange things to galvanised bolts. Anything older than a decade sheared at the head.

A week of fog

Six mornings in a row the far shore vanished before eight and came back after eleven. The gulls kept to the pilings and made no noise at all, which is unusual for them.

Notes on the pump

Replaced the impeller. Flow is back to what it was two summers ago. The trick was warming the housing before pulling the shaft, otherwise it will not move at all.
